About our cause

Citizens Advice Rotherham & District provides a much loved and valued service for the community.

We give free, confidential advice over the phone, by video, webchat and in person. When we say we’re for everyone, we mean it.

People rely on us because we’re independent and totally impartial. No one else sees so many people with so many different kinds of problems, and that gives us a unique insight into the challenges people are facing today. With the right evidence, we can show big organisations - from companies right up to the government - how they can make things better for people.

That’s why we’re here: to give people the knowledge and the confidence they need to find their way forward - whoever they are, and whatever their problem.

We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Hear from our team:

Debt Service Manager;

During my time in debt advice, I have seen many changes and difficulties that client’s experience. One of the biggest changes was during the pandemic when all debt recovery was suspended. This has never happened before and resulted in a huge reduction of the need for debt advice, not just at CARD but nationwide.

Many clients seek debt advice when they have an emergency to deal with for example bailiffs visiting their property and demanding large unaffordable repayments and with the suspension of recovery, this was not happening.

When the suspension was lifted the need for debt advice started to increase and the demand is higher than it has ever been. With the cost of living crisis getting worse, the demand is expected to be even greater.

We are seeing more and more client’s with deficit budgets and this means that their options of getting out of debt are limited. If a client chooses an insolvency option to clear their debt, it is likely that they will be in debt again within a few months. We do explore all options with our clients, and the advice is tailored to their circumstances.

As part of the debt advice process, we look at income maximisation to see if there are any benefits a client can claim or if there are any grants available to help them. We also negotiate with creditors to try and reach an affordable agreement. We explain the powers each creditor has and this is very important because it provides the client with reassurance when prioritising their debts.
